From late Middle High German gīze (“greed”), a back-formation from Middle High German gīzen, gītsen (“greedy”), from Middle High German gīt (“greed”), from Old High German *gītisōn, from Proto-West Germanic *gīdisōn.
Cognate with Luxembourgish Gäiz and Old English ġītsian (“to desire, long for”).
