Usage notes

• In the 1970s and 80s, when the dialect was still the predominant vernacular of the region, the use of it was a natural choice by rock musicians, meaning that there was a sharp distinction between Kölschrock and traditional Colognian folk and carnival music, as expressed in BAP’s famous chorus Nit für Kooche, Lück, bliev ich Karneval hee! (“Not for cake, people, I'd stay here on carnival!”) However, a continuum has since formed between both genres, due to greater tolerance among the carnival associations on the one hand, and the language shift to Standard German on the other, which means that contemporary bands like Kasalla choose the dialect consciously as a regional tint.
