editFrom Rotwelsch, first attested in 1835 as Kolldampf. Tautological compound of Kohler, Koller (“hunger”) + Dampf (“hunger”, literally “steam”). Not related to Russian голод (golod, “hunger”), German Kohl (“cabbage”).
