GermanEdit

EtymologyEdit

From the verb kontern, from English to counter (originally in the context of boxing). The noun is probably not derived directly from the verb but as a clipping of the noun Konterschlag (counterstrike, backlash), from kontern + Schlag. Compare also the prefix konter-, from French contre, which influenced the phonetic form of these words.

PronunciationEdit

NounEdit

Konter m (genitive Konters, plural Konter)

  1. (sports) counter-attack
  2. (figuratively) repartee; comeback (witty answer)
