From Middle High German murmeltier (14th c.), folk-etymological alteration as murmeln (to murmur) +‎ Tier (animal) of older murmendīn, from Old High German murmunto (probably through a diminutive *murmuntīn), from Latin mūrem montis (accusative, literally mountain rat). Compare English marmot.
