editSuggested to be related to *sīniti (“to stretch, extend”) (whence Middle Irish sínid) and *sīros (“long”), from *seh₁- (“long, lasting”), compare semantics of French temps (“time; weather”), from Latin tempus (“time; season”), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *temp- (“to stretch”).[1]
