From Pre-Germanic *ph₁ih₁yé-, from an original stative *ph₁yéh₁-, to a ye-present formation from Proto-Indo-European *peh₁- (to hate). Cognate with Sanskrit पीयति (pī́yati, to blame).[1][2]
