From Proto-Indo-European *ḱolnó-, *ḱelnó- (“room”), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱol-, *ḱel- (“to hide, cover, conceal, protect”). Cognate with Latin cella (“room, cell”), Sanskrit शाला (śā́lā, “house, mansion, hall”).
