Etymology

Clipping of *ne (“not”) +‎ *(j)e (“short form of *estь (“is”)”) +‎ *tu (dat. of *tъ (“that”)) (as per Sobolevskij). Some descendants reflect the acc. formation *nětъ (literally: not so).
