Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *ḱléwt , from Proto-Indo-European *ḱlew- ( “ to listen to ” ) . In Slavic, the root vowel was retracted to *-o- before heterosyllabic *-w- (as in *novъ < Pre-Slavic *néwos ).
