t?

edit

I don't see any t- in the descendants, why is it reconstructed? —CodeCat 11:27, 22 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

See the Greek form, which looks to have metathesized -tp- to -pt-. --Victar (talk) 14:17, 22 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
I wonder if that's the regular outcome of this cluster. Are there other examples? —CodeCat 14:18, 22 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
Our entry spuo gives *stpuH-ie- as the etymon, whence Greek πτύω (ptúō). --Barytonesis (talk) 14:37, 22 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
Yep, seems to be a predictable outcome.
* πόλις (pólis), πτόλις (ptólis, citadel) from *tpelH-
* πτοέω (ptoéō), πτοιέω (ptoiéō, to frighten) from *tpew-.

Heh, so if history had gone a bit different, we'd have Minneaptolis... —CodeCat 10:32, 23 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hah, that would have been awkward. --Victar (talk) 13:35, 23 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
