Acceptable accent codes

What accents are supported? Are they in the format en-AU? —Michael Z. 2008-11-25 19:21 z

Anything you type as the parameter after the {{a| will show up as the name of the accent, but if you use one of the ones listed at Category:Accent templates (ignoring the "Template:accent:" part), it will add a link to the Wikipedia article. Angr 15:39, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

Module:a implementation

@EncycloPetey I have made a new implementation of this template using Module:a and Module:a/data as the current implementation is a bit unwieldy and does not store all of its data centrally. You may see a test of all the currently available presets here. Would you switch this to the new module please? —JohnC5 21:44, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

Template:a subtemplates

I, with some help from User:Kc kennylau, have reïmplemented the {{a}} template using Module:a and Module:a/data. This will provide a much easier and more centralized interface for adding new accents (something which should probably happen, by the way). Is there any reason to keep the templates listed below, and if not, would someone delete them? All of their functionality has been added to the new module, as seen in my sandbox.

Template:a

To {{accent}}. Reason: {{a}} tells you nothing about what the template does or what it's for; {{accent}} tells you (roughly) what it's for. While {{a|idiomatic}} may not be an obvious error {{accent|idiomatic}} is, because nobody would think that 'idiomatic' is an accent. By the way, I'm not suggesting deprecating or deleting {{a}}, just renaming it so that {{a}} is a redirect. Renard Migrant (talk) 17:44, 15 February 2016 (UTC)

Support. Seems obvious, and has parallels in the other shortcuts ({{l}}, {{m}}, {{q}}, ...). If we do this, we should probably rename Module:a and Module:a/data accordingly. Benwing2 (talk) 18:16, 15 February 2016 (UTC)

I don't think he's suggesting renaming uses of {{a}} to {{accent}}, which I'd also oppose, but just renaming the template itself and leaving {{a}} as a redirect, similarly to how {{l}} and {{m}} currently work. Benwing2 (talk) 19:16, 15 February 2016 (UTC)

I Support the merger, however I wonder about using accent as the name since it has multiple meanings in a dictionary context. Is there a better descriptive word, perhaps dialect or vernacular? Those are somewhat problematic as well, so maybe there isn't a term which lacks nuance. - TheDaveRoss 21:50, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

"variety" seems the most appropriate for what the template is used to. However, that would mean we could no longer use {{a}} as the shortcut, or accept that it's just a meaningless letter. —CodeCat 21:57, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

Or, if it is used exclusively in the pronunciation section, it could be {{pronunciation}} and {{p}}. Either way, we should keep {{a}} as a redirect. - TheDaveRoss 22:18, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

Language code

This template should use a language code as a first parameter, like very other template on Wiktionary. It is weird to see multilingual countries listed with only one language under the regional name. -- 65.93.183.191 11:43, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
