Etymology

edit

From Old Norse Trums (Tromsøya), possibly from straumr (stream, current, tide), from Proto-Germanic *straumaz (stream, current, river), from Proto-Indo-European *srowmos, *strow-mo-s, from *srew- (to flow, stream), possibly from *ser- (to flow). Dropping the initial S- may be due to Sami influence. Doublet of Troms.
