Thanks for signing up. At present I am working on adding nouns to Wiktionary. I am using my dictionary and adding words from the start to the end of the dictionary. Gmcfoley 15:50, 7 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Japanese Layout edit

Invitation to contribute edit

Hi,

You might or might not already be aware that there is now a new system in place for marking translations that need to be checked (those that are suspected of being incorrect or those where it is not clear which sense(s) of a word the translations apply to). (See here for the Beer parlour discussion on this topic.)

Translations to be checked are now categorised by language. For example, Category:Translations_to_be_checked_(French) contains a list of all words where French translations need to be checked. This is designed to make the checking of these translations easier to maintain and work with.

I'm contacting everyone who has either expressed an interest in working on translations or has indicated in Wiktionary:Babel that they have a good knowledge of a particular foreign language or languages.

Would you be interested in helping out with the translations to be checked for Japanese and for Portuguese? If so, please read the page on how to check translations.

If you want to reply to this message, please do so on my talk page. Thanks for your help you can provide.

Changes to WT:ELE edit

Hello!

I was just wondering on what you based your changes regarding the layout of the translation sections in WT:ELE upon. I didn't see any discussion on Wiktionary_talk:Entry_layout_explained about it. Do the templates you advocated there result in the same output as the following?

short definition
top
*Lang1: word
mid
*Lang2: word2
bottom

and

;short definition
top
*Lang1: word
mid
*Lang2: word2
bottom

...and if so, is there any additional behind the scenes magic that results from use of the templates?

If there's a policy page that indicates the layout you added, please direct me to it (I don't enter translations much myself, but I often add stubs when doing cleanup.) --Jeffqyzt 16:43, 12 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm not really requesting that we go through more consensus gathering process (though I would not be opposed); it's more that I think that there should be a pointer in the discussion page of WT:ELE back to the discussion that brought about the change, so that interested parties that weren't directly involved could see what was discussed. Insofar as WT:ELE is pretty basic to the functioning of this project (as the basic reference by which edits should be made) any changes affect the community as a whole. Another alternative would be to post a Beer Parlor note prior to making the change (again, if it's there and I missed it, please direct me to the article.) Thanks. --Jeffqyzt 14:41, 13 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
The templates trans-top, -mid, -bottom are experimental created by me as part of a WT:GP discussion on whether we could make the translation section(s) collapsible. They have not been discussed. We added them to get and Aaronsama added them to orange. They would still need work before being generally used; and probably the code would be added into top rather than changing over the template names. But nothing was decided or even discussed very much. We were just looking at it.
They should not be used generally yet. Aaronsama, I'm reverting the change to WT:ELE, it isn't bad (and you haven't done anything wrong), it is just that we need to talk about whether we want to do this sort of thing, and also it needs some technical work before making it standard (I just did a fast demo!). If you could read about it on WT:GP and perhaps raise it on the talk page here or in WT:BP if you like? If it is wanted, I or someone else needs to do some coding at template and CSS level. Thanks! I'm going to add this to WT:BP, explaining that I've temporarily reverted your edit to WT:ELE. Thanks! Robert Ullmann

Belated welcome edit

Hello, and welcome to Wiktionary!

If you have edited Wikipedia, you probably already know some basics, but Wiktionary does have a few conventions of its own. Please take a moment to learn our basics before jumping in.

First, all articles should be in our standard format, even if they are not yet complete. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with it. You can use one of our pre-defined article templates by typing the name of a non-existent article into the search box and hitting 'Go'.

Notice that article titles are case-sensitive and are not capitalized unless, like proper nouns, they are ordinarily capitalized (Poland or January). Also, take a moment to familiarize yourself with our criteria for inclusion, since Wiktionary is not an encyclopedia. Don't go looking for a Village pump – we have a Beer parlour. Note that while Wikipedia likes redirects, Wiktionary deletes most redirects, (especially spelling variations) in favor of short entries. Please do not copy entries here from Wikipedia if they are in w:CAT:MtW; request the full history import instead, at WT:ID.

Finally, you can link Wikipedia pages, including your user page, using w:pagename, wikipedia, or pagename. Please do not create redirects to Wikipedia pages, though. They don't work.

We hope you enjoy editing Wiktionary and being a Wiktionarian. --Connel MacKenzie 19:10, 14 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
