Welcome

edit

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary!

I reverted your edit to arpagic because you gutted the entry based solely on a discussion on another wiki. Given that the DEX entry linked in the entry refers specifically to Allium schoenoprasum and the image is definitely that of the same species (I've been growing chives for 50 years, and I know what they look like), I don't see how you can justify that. Of course, it may refer to other species, as well. At any rate, if you want to challenge a Romanian definition here, you tag it with {{rfv|ro}} and post it at WT:RFVN. If there's no usage for that meaning, it will be deleted. Chuck Entz (talk) 13:25, 17 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

First, thank you for the welcome and for explaining your actions. Explanations are much appreciated. Second, it is not that Allium schoenoprasum is chives, there is no question about that (I grow them too, btw). The problem is that in Romanian we have a different word for chives: ceapă perenă pitică, ceapă pitică, cepșoară, civetă, ceapă de tuns, harpagică, sibulet (see the page discussion). The word 'Arpagic' refers to onion (Allium cepa) starter bulbs. I am explaining in the discussion of the page right now. I am adding refs and primary sources and the whole 9 yards. Just give me an hour or maybe more :) It takes time. I also need to translate the discussion in both languages, since this is a linguistic problem that Romanian speakers who might not know English may want to contribute to. BTW, thanks for the links. I am, obviously, new to Wiktionary (thought not to Wikipedia) and I can use any help I can get. I may bother you in the future with questions. WikiUser70176 (talk) 13:45, 17 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
