From Middle High German wulst m, wulste f, from Old High German wulst m, wulsta f, from Proto-West Germanic *hwulfsti, from Proto-Germanic *hwulfstiz (“curvature, vaulting, bulge”), from Proto-Indo-European *kʷelp- (“to curve”). Related to German wölben (“to curve, bend, arch”), English whelm (“to engulf”).
