Etymology

edit

First attested as sellar in 1357. Compound derived from an unclear first element and laar (intensively cultivated forest). The first element has been variously interpreted as a contraction of Middle Dutch seer (sick, ill) or sere, sel (hall house) and Proto-Germanic *salah (willow).
