From Proto-West Germanic *angul, from Proto-Germanic *angulaz (fishhook), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂enkulós (bent, crooked). Cognate with Old Frisian *ongel, Old Saxon angul, Old High German angul, Old Norse ǫngull, and outside of Germanic, with Ancient Greek ἀγκύλος (ankúlos, bent, crooked).[1]
