Alteration of earlier balbuçar, from Vulgar Latin *balbūtiāre, a variant of Latin balbūtiō (to stutter, stammer).

    The speaker stammered and monotonously repeated the same phrase.
  2. (transitive) to stammer (out), babble, bleat out
    Balbucejava mots a mitges, tremolava.
    She stammered out words incompletely, she trembled.
