Possibly from Chinese.[1] Compare Hokkien 望 (bāng)臺/台 (tâi),[2] Hokkien 萬代/万代 (bān-tāi), Hokkien 向望 (ǹg-bāng), Tagalog abang, and Tagalog antay. Cognates with Bikol Central bantay, Cebuano bantay, Hiligaynon bantay, Kapampangan bante, Maranao bantay, and Waray-Waray bantay.
