From Middle Dutch smuyck, from Old Dutch smuyck. The prefix be- was added as phonetic contamination from the past participle of smuiken (to be hidden or calm). Compare also the related verbs smokkelen and smuiken, all ultimately from Proto-Germanic *smukkōną (to slide, slip through).
