dùth
Scottish Gaelic
editEtymology
editFrom an earlier root dù, from Old Irish dú. Stokes originally suggested that the early root was borrowed from Old French dû (> French dû, English due), from devoir (“to owe”), but MacBain notes a connection between the earlier root, dual (“hereditary right”), and dùthaich (“a country, district”).
