höyry
Finnish
editEtymology
editFrom Proto-Finnic *heürü. Related to Ingrian höyry, Karelian höyry and Votic höürü.
Pronunciation
editNoun
edithöyry
- vapor (gaseous state of a substance that is normally a solid or liquid)
- vapor (cloudy diffused matter suspended in the air)
- steam (vapor from water, in any pressure)
- Synonym: vesihöyry (technical)
Usage notes
edithöyry for "steam, water vapor/vapour" is a nonspecific term, and vesihöyry tends to be used instead in technical contexts (although höyry may also be used when there is no risk of ambiguity, e.g. when vesihöyry was used earlier, or in compounds).
