• The 眾／众 (“the masses”) (Japanese 衆 (shū)) might have been a misinterpretation of Japanese 州 (shū, châu, “province; state”), thus a literal "united states"
• 合眾／合众 (literally “the united masses”) or 眾國／众国 (literally “states of the masses”) might convey something similar to 共和 (gònghé, “republican (states)”), thus a "united republican states"
