From Proto-Finnic *kanto, probably from Proto-Finno-Ugric *kanta, the same root as kand (“heel”) (Proto-Finnic *kanta). Another theory suggests a borrowing from Proto-Indo-Iranian *skandʰás, compare Sanskrit स्कन्ध (skandha).
The irregular change *a > ä has occurred to differentiate from kand (“heel”), though many dialects retain the original vowel.
Cognates include Votic, Ingrian, and Finnish kanto, Võro, Livonian, Ludian, and Veps kand, Karelian kando; Northern Sami guottu, Lule Sami guottoj, Pite Sami guoddo, Southern Sami gåådte (from Proto-Samic *kuontōj); Erzya кандо (kando, “block, log”), Moksha канда (kanda, “block, log”).
