Compound of madrasah + sanawiah, from Arabic مَدْرَسَة ثَانَوِيَّة (madrasa(t) ṯānawiyya), ثَانَوِيَّة (ṯānawiyya, “secondary, minor”) + مَدْرَسَة (madrasa).
