Compound of madrasah +‎ sanawiah, from Arabic مَدْرَسَة ثَانَوِيَّة (madrasa(t) ṯānawiyya), ثَانَوِيَّة (ṯānawiyya, secondary, minor) +‎ مَدْرَسَة (madrasa).
