editFrom Middle Irish methel, from Proto-Celtic *metelā (“troop of reapers”) (whence also Welsh medel (“reaping party”)), from the root of *meteti (“to reap, cut”), from Proto-Indo-European *met- (“to cut, reap”) (compare Latin metō, Czech and Polish motyka (“hoe”), English mattock.
