Etymology
editAccording to the Vocabulario de la lengua tagala (1860), the variant pungkahi is the same with pungka, which is said to be of Chinese origin. Possibly from Hokkien 旁敲 (pông-khà, “sidestrike”) according to Manuel (1948).
