Etymology 1 edit

From Proto-Vietic *nɔːk (stinger (of insect); venom). Possibly related to chọc (to prick, to puncture) (Alves, 2015) through an infixed form.

Attested with the meaning "stinger" (Portuguese ferrão, Latin aculeus) in Middle Vietnamese in the Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum.
