From Proto-Finnic *nitodak, probably from Proto-Finno-Permic *ńiδa-.[1] Cognates include Estonian niduma, Northern Sami njađđit and Erzya недямс (ńeďams). Possibly ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gned-, *gnod-.
