Borrowed from Spanish hostia, from Latin hostia (victim, sacrifice), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰóstis (guest, stranger) in its root sense of "enemy, stranger," whence also Proto-Germanic *gastiz and Proto-Slavic *gostь.
