editA wanderword. Via either Slovene podgána or Italian pantegana. Compare Venetian pantegàna (“rat”). Ultimately from Byzantine Greek ποντικός (pontikós), from μῦς ποντικός (mûs pontikós, “rat”, literally “pontic mouse”).[1][2]
