From Middle Dutch *prettig (attested only in form pertich (smart, cunning, swift, lively, pert) > Dutch pertig (ill-tempered, disturbed, quirky), West Flemish pertig (cute, nice, pretty, graceful)), from Old Dutch *prettig, *prattig, from Proto-West Germanic *prattīg, from Proto-Germanic *prattugaz (boastful, sly, cunning, tricky), equivalent to pret +‎ -ig. Doublet of pertig. Cognate with English pretty.
