editFrom Middle Dutch *prettig (attested only in form pertich (“smart, cunning, swift, lively, pert”) > Dutch pertig (“ill-tempered, disturbed, quirky”), West Flemish pertig (“cute, nice, pretty, graceful”)), from Old Dutch *prettig, *prattig, from Proto-West Germanic *prattīg, from Proto-Germanic *prattugaz (“boastful, sly, cunning, tricky”), equivalent to pret + -ig. Doublet of pertig. Cognate with English pretty.
