róa
Icelandic
editPronunciation
edit- Rhymes: -ouːa
Etymology 1
editFrom Old Norse róa, from Proto-Germanic *rōaną, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁reh₁-.
Verb
editróa (ri-verb, third-person singular past indicative reri or réri, supine róið)
Usage notes
edit- One of the four ri-verbs in Icelandic, the other being núa (“to rub, massage; to wipe”), snúa (“to turn”) and gróa (“to grow; to heal”).
- As with the other ri-verbs, the past tense reri was originally pronounced with an e sound but is today pronounced with a é sound. There are therefore two spelling variants used: reri and réri. The Icelandic Ministry of Education considers both variants to be equally correct,[1] but many speakers consider the original reri spelling to be the more correct one.
Synonyms
edit- (row): knýja árum
- (sail out to fish): róa til fiskjar
- (rock backwards and forwards): rugga
