Inherited from Old Catalan ribera, from Vulgar Latin *rīpāria (“riverbank, seashore, river”), a noun based on the feminine of Latin rīpārius (“riverbank-related”), an adjective based on rīpa (“river bank”). Compare Occitan ribièra, Spanish ribera, French rivière.
