A formation from vig, possibly related to Proto-Indo-European *u̯eik 'force, energy (victory, battle, etc.). Compare Latin vinco ‎(I win, beat), Lithuanian veikiù ‎(make work), Old High German wig ‎(battle, struggle), wigant ‎(cripple), Old English wǣgan ‎(to torment, smite).
