From Proto-Turkic *yalŋuz, *yalïŋuz, a derivation from Proto-Turkic *yalïŋ (“lonely”), see there for more cognates. Doublet of yalqız. Related to Azerbaijani yalın (“naked, bare”), as in ayaqyalın (“barefoot”).

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish یالڭز (yalñız), from Proto-Turkic *yalïŋ (“lonely”). Compare Old Turkic [script needed] (yalıŋuz), from yalıŋ ("naked") (compare yalın), from yalın- ("to undress oneself"), probably a reflexive of *yal- ("to take off") (compare giyin- (“to dress oneself”), reflexive of giy- (“to wear”)).
