Etymology edit

Disputed. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₁us-los, whence Old English ysle, Old Norse usli (embers), from *h₁ews- (to burn).[1] Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *h₂us-los, compare Sanskrit उस्र (usrá, reddish, ruddy; bright; matutinal), from *h₂ews- (to dawn).[2] Also in view of the alternative with h-, there have been posited connections with *sóh₂wl̥, *sh₂wén- (sun), whence Latin sōl, and with *(s)ḱeh₃ih₂ (shadow), whence Albanian hije.[3]
