Inherited from Proto-Slavic *drapati. Soft "р" is probably of expressive origin, compare Slovak driapať for the same development. Doublet of дра́пати (drápaty) without soft "р". Cognate with Belarusian дра́паць (drápacʹ), Russian дра́пать (drápatʹ), Czech drápat, Polish drapać.
