Old Armenian
editEtymology
editProbably related to Hittite [script needed] (šalpa-), [script needed] (šalpi, “dung?”) and derived from Proto-Indo-European *sal-bʰo- (“dirty”) (the o-stem) and *sal-bʰi- (“dirt, excrement”) (the i-stem), from*solH- (“dirt, dirty”). Alternatively, the Hittite and Armenian words are from Proto-Indo-European *selpo- and cognate to Sanskrit Sanskrit सर्पिष् (sarpíṣ-, “molten butter, lard”), German Salbe (“ointment”).
