The original spelling is աւրեն (awren), from Parthian 𐫀𐫁𐫅𐫏𐫗 (ʾbdyn /⁠aβδēn⁠/, “custom, habit; customary, usual; manner, way”), which is cognate with Avestan 𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬌𐬜𐬀𐬌𐬌𐬀𐬥𐬀 (auuiδaiiana), composed of the prefix 𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬌- (auui-, “toward”) and the verb 𐬜𐬁𐬌- (δāi-, “to watch, to see”), corresponding to Persian دیدن (didan). The same verb with the prefix *aH- gave Middle Iranian *āδēn, whence Old Armenian -արէն (-arēn) and Persian آیین (âyin, “custom”). Related to օրինակ (ōrinak).

The sense “district, province” arose mistakenly as a semantic loan from Ancient Greek νόμος (nómos, “law, custom”) by confusing it with νομός (nomós, “district, nome”). The sense “menstruation” is a semantic loan from Classical Syriac ܐܘܪܚܐ (ʼūrḥāʼ, “way, road; law, custom; menstruation”).
