From Proto-Turkic *ōtčak (hearth), from *ōt (fire), whence also Ottoman Turkish اود (od, fire); cognate with Azerbaijani ocaq, Bashkir уҫаҡ (uśaq), Chuvash вучах (vuč̬ah), Kazakh ошақ (oşaq), Kyrgyz очок (ocok), Southern Altai очок (očok), Tatar учак (uçaq) and Uzbek oʻchoq, while Russian оча́г (očág) is borrowed from Turkic.
