Inherited from Common Turkic *yalŋuz (alone, lonely); cognate with Old Turkic 𐰖𐰀𐰞𐰭𐰆𐰽 (yalıŋus), Azerbaijani yalnız, Bashkir яңғыҙ (yañğıź), Kazakh жалғыз (jalğyz), Kyrgyz жалгыз (jalgız), Turkmen ýalňyz, Uzbek yolgʻiz and Yakut соҕотох (soğotoq).
