From अर्ण (arṇa, being in motion; restless; wave), from the root (, to rise, move, shake); ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₃er- (to move, stir, rise). Doublet of अर्णस् (arṇas, river, stream, flood), इयर्ति (iyarti), ऋणोति (ṛṇoti). Cognate with English run, origin, orient and Ancient Greek ἔρνος (érnos), ὄρνῡμῐ (órnūmi).
