editFrom Proto-Indo-Aryan *Huṣṇás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hušnás, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁us-nós, from *h₁ews- (“to burn”). Cognate with Latin ūrō. The Sanskrit root is उष् (uṣ, “to burn, consume”).
