Etymology
editBeekes compares Ancient Greek κάλυξ (kálux, “calyx, husk”), but acknowledges that this could only be a resemblance.[1] The sense of "bud" has a Dravidian parallel in Tamil கால் (kāl, “stem of a flower, foot, leg”), perhaps evolved from a sense of "thrusting out."[2]
