From older खेवना (khevnā), from Sanskrit क्षेपयति (kṣepayati, to cause to be thrown) (whence Pali khepeti (passes (time))), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *kṣaypáyati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kšwaypáyati, from Proto-Indo-European *kswoybʰ-éye-ti. Cognate with Nepali खियाउनु (khiyāunu) and English sweep.
