Etymology

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀕𑀺𑀡𑀤𑀺 (*giṇadi). The original vowel was probably -ṛ-, hence the variation in 𑀕𑀡𑁂𑀇 (gaṇei) and Sanskrit गणयति (gaṇayati, counts), borrowed from Prakrit. See गण् (gaṇ) for more. Cognate with Nepali गन्नु (gannu). Doublet of गणना (gaṇnā).
