Etymology

Inherited from Prakrit *𑀘𑀫𑁆𑀫𑀓𑁆𑀓 (*cammakka), from an onomatopoeic 𑀘𑀫𑁆𑀫 (camma) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓𑁆𑀓- (-kka-).[1] Related to चौंकना (ca͠uknā) (perhaps from a variant Prakrit *𑀘𑀫𑀓𑁆𑀓 (*camakka)), Sanskrit चमत्कार (camatkāra), चमत्कृति (camatkṛti). Cognate with Punjabi ਚਮਕਣਾ (camkaṇā) / چَمَکنا (camaknā), Gujarati ચમકવું (camakvũ), Marathi चमकणे (ċamakṇe).
