Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀚𑀸𑀡𑀤𑀺 (jāṇadi), from Sanskrit जानाति (jānā́ti), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *ȷ́ānáHti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ānáHti, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵn̥néh₃ti, from *ǵneh₃- (to know). Cognate with Marathi जाणणे (jāṇṇe), Old English cnāwan (whence English know). Compare Sanskrit जाना (jānā) + अनीयं (anīyaṃ). .
